Coping with COVID-19: Mental Health

During this time of uncertainty and change, it can be exceedingly difficult to cope. Major stressors in your life can cause for a decline in your mental health. The stress from COVID-19 can disrupt us from our daily routine. This may result in the take up of habits that further decline your mental health. Therefore, it is important to stay informed about how to take care of your mental health.

Firstly, it is important to identify what in your life is causing you to stress. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it is entirely normal to have feelings of:


Isolation – While in quarantine, you might be away from family and friends. This can cause loneliness, boredom, helplessness, depression, and a decline in your mental health.


Concern for Education – The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a shift in education for your children or for yourself. You might find yourself worrying for your future and how you will adapt to the change at hand.


Financial Stress – During times of uncertainty, you might worry about losing your job, not being able to work or finances.


It is particularly important to be able to cope with the stressors that are negatively impacting your life. There are several steps that you can take to be able to adapt to the change that is occurring:

  1. Pause (breathe/reflect) – Practice meditation, relaxation, and mindfulness by stretching, and taking deep breaths

  2. Connect with others – During the COVID-19 pandemic it is important to connect with family and friends through video chats, telephone, and email.

  3. Be Kind to Yourself – Remember that you are human, we all have days that are not the best and we all make mistakes. Face things one at a time and take breaks when they are needed.

  4. Reach out for help if you need it – If you find that you need more help, contact your primary health provider, a registered psychologist, or another mental health provider in your community. Many licensed psychologists are offering telehealth options through PHIPA-compliant virtual platforms.

Another way you can aid your mental health is by staying informed on what is happening regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. This way, you will be able to take the appropriate measures needed to limit the spread of the infection. Although the amount of information online can lead to increased levels of stress and anxiety, there are many sites online that can provide you with the appropriate information.
